The Grants/Milan communities have a population of approximately 12,000 people, and are located on Interstate 40 approximately 80 miles west of New Mexico's largest city, Albuquerque. Deemed the "Uranium Capital of the World" in the 1960s and 1970s, Grants has experienced several economic booms over the years from profitable mining, carrot farming and now the prison industry with three prisons and a county jail in and around the city. Law enforcement offices include the Milan Police Department, Grants Police Department, County Sheriff's Department and a New Mexico State Police Department outpost, all within the boundaries of the town.
