Bob Kurtz was named Warden of Huerfano County Correctional Center in May 2001. He had been Assistant Warden of the facility since August 1997 when the facility opened. Kurtz joined CCA in 1995 as Warden of its B.M. Moore facility in Overton, Texas. He transferred to Huerfano in 1997.
Prior to joining CCA, Kurtz served for 20 years in the U.S. Army. He holds a masters degree in management from Webster University and a bachelors degree in economic from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Huerfano County Correctional Center is located in the Colorado city of Walsenberg, approximately 150 miles south of Denver, the state capitol. The city of Walsenberg and the greater county of Huerfano have populations of approximately 4,500 and 8,000, respectively. Walsenberg was originally settled as Plaza de los Leones in 1862, but is named after a business man who settled there in 1870 and opened the first and eventually the most successful coal mine in the county, Fred Walsen. The city boasts 300+ days of sunshine per year and beautiful views of the Spanish Peaks and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Community Activities: Staff and inmates at the facility spend a lot of time volunteering for and contributing to various organizations and boards in the community including carpentry work, site maintenance and restoration, and special events projects for Walsenberg Elementary School, Huerfano County Court House, Eagles Lodge, Heurfano County Shop, the Chamber of Commerce, Walsenberg Police Department, the local Christmas Parade, the Walsenberg City Sign, Walsenberg Water Treatment Faciliy, Walsenberg Municipal Center and Walsenberg High School.
Programs Offered: Huerfano County Correctional Center is currently providing programs for inmates in the following areas: core curriculum, substance abuse, substance abuse aftercare, parenting classes and anger management. Inmates are also able to participate in weekly AA and NA meetings provided by facility volunteers. In the spring, the Recreation Department finished the basketball and volleyball leagues and started the softball league. During the first quarter, the inmates raised approximately $1,200 for the Walsenburg High School, Athletics Department through fast food sales.
