Benefits of Correctional Medicine

Our dedicated teams of health care professionals find their careers at CCA rewarding and enjoy the unique benefits of our corrections work environment. Our clinic-like setting offers all the rewards of a hospital or doctor’s office environment without many of the public-sector draw-backs.

CCA offers competitive health care salaries – comparable to those found in other settings in the medical profession. But it is our work environment that sets CCA apart from other prospective health care employers: regular shift work and flexible shift hours, guaranteed hours, excellent benefits, and a 401(k) plan.

Greater Autonomy
Health care professionals working in the corrections industry have great autonomy – as well as the opportunity to be active in the entire continuum of patient care. Facility health care staffs oversee all stages of patient treatment, from care planning to clinical outcomes. The nature of the population served provides additional perks for health care professionals: there are no bed pans to change at our facilities. Acute care is a reality, but a rare and short-term occurrence, as serious illnesses and injuries are transferred to community health care facilities.

Work with a Team
Operating a correctional facility is a team effort. Nurses, physicians, and all other medical staff at CCA work side-by-side to ensure the best quality of care for our offenders.

A Focus on Preventative Care and Education
Health care teams at CCA are often the first step in helping an offender identify medical concerns such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV and other chronic illnesses. CCA employs an emphasis on education that may include group meetings to discuss care and maintenance of various illnesses and other educational health care programs.

High Standards and Accountability
CCA’s medical services units operate by the highest industry standards. CCA medical departments are certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, the most rigorous industry standards for corrections and health care provider organizations.

Training and Continuing Education
Professional development and training is a company priority. In addition to the necessary in-services and certification courses for health care professionals, CCA health services staff participate in annual conferences and training sessions. Health services staff conduct peer reviews, professional credentialing, and perform trend analysis for mortality and morbidity reviews. CCA’s facility teams are overseen by health services regional directors, a vice president, chief medical officer, a managing director of health services, dental director, mental health director, and a team of utilization review nurses.

Each day at CCA holds new opportunities for service and learning. Join our team of highly qualified health care professionals and start taking advantage of all the benefits of a career in correctional medicine.
